As the region grows and technology improves, we will continue to seek better ways to treat wastewater, just as we have for the past 50 years. We are moving from an era of "sewage treatment" to one of "water reclamation" as expectations and needs increase. Regulations that reliably protect public health and safety are essential for water re-use to become a true reality in this area.
We don't know where current discussions will lead us, but the City is committed to collaborating on a Spokane River TMDL solution for our community and region that is both achievable and affordable. Should the Spokane River TMDL Collaboration discussions fail, and Ecology's proposed standards become the standard to meet, our ratepayers would have to pay for the improvements needed to try to meet a standard that may be unachievable with existing technology. This could cost as much as an additional $500 million and boost each citizen's utility bill to around $100 per month. |
