Release Date: 9/4/2009 12:00:00 AM

Contact: Marlene Feist, 625-6740

A five-day celebration for the quartet of Spokane’s Sister City affiliations is set for the week of September 21 through 25, according to Charles Rehberg, president of the Spokane Sister Cities Association.

Spokane’s four Sister City Societies have planned cultural activities for the five days, culminating in a public “Cultural Feast” banquet on Friday evening that will feature the cuisines of each of the four countries with a Spokane Sister City…Japan, China, Ireland and South Korea. Tickets for the banquet, at $30 each and must be purchased in advance for the limited-seating event. Tickets are available through the Mayor’s office by contacting Catherine Gallaher at catgotyertongue@yahoo.com or Marlene Feist at mfeist@spokanecity.org.

If your taste buds are longing for Irish Glazed Corned Beef…or Japanese Sukiyaki…maybe Korean Kimchee…or Chinese Braised Meatballs…the Student Union Building at Spokane Falls Community College is the place to be Friday night, September 25. The Sister Cities Association is sponsoring the banquet to raise funds for scholarships and other programs to promote understanding between Spokane and her Sister Cities.

Affiliation with international sister cities has been a part of Spokane culture for nearly 50 years with the establishment of the Spokane-Nishinomiya Sister City Society in September of 1961, while Limerick, Ireland came aboard in 1980, Jilin City, China in 1987 and Jecheon, South Korea in 1999.

Shortly after Labor Day, a special exhibit of photos from each of the Sister Cities, and from Spokane, will be displayed on the second floor at River Park Square.

The five-day celebration starts Monday the 21st with a Japanese Cultural Fair at the Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute’s Japanese Cultural Center from 6 -8 p.m. Contact Candie Coker at 328-2971 or candiec@mfwi.org

Tuesday, September 22, the Jilin Sister City Society features a cooking class from 4 - 6:30 p.m. on preparing authentic Chinese dumplings. There is a fee for the class. Contact Margo Buckles at 280-3116 or margo.buckles@matrical.com

Wednesday, Sept. 23, features an Irish Literary Pub Crawl in downtown Spokane sponsored by the Limerick Society. There is a fee for the event which includes dinner. Contact Kerry Lynch at klynchapi@comcast.net

And Thursday, Sept. 24, is a night at the movies sponsored by the Jecheon Sister City Society. This event is free. For information contact Hyunki Ahn at spokanewees04@yahoo.com

Spokane Mayor Mary Verner, who headed a trade and cultural delegation to Jecheon and Jilin in July, will issue a proclamation encouraging Spokane area residents to join in the Sister Cities celebration.
