The City of Spokane, Spokane Parks & Recreation Department, and Spokefest invite residents to “Spokane Summer Parkways,” a brand-new event designed to support health and community.
On July 11 and Aug. 22, citizens are welcome to bring their bikes, boards, or feet down to Howard Street from Riverfront Park to Corbin Park. Both events will take place between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. with activities for the whole family, including snacks, music and dancing. Physical activity classes in yoga, Zumba, Hula Hoops and martial arts will also be offered.
“Spokane Summer Parkways” was inspired by an event in Bogotá, Columbia called Ciclovia, which means “bike path” in Spanish. Ciclovia takes place during Sundays and holidays. The goal of these events is to focus on recreation, fitness and community.
During the event, three miles of street will be closed to all motor vehicles and be open for all human-powered transportation such as bikes, skateboards and pedestrians. Bikers are asked to lock up their bikes while participating in the street activities, which are located at either end of the course with destination points between.
