SMART Sustainable Business Certification

With interest in sustainable and “green” practices ever-growing, the City of Spokane is continuing its recognition and certification program for local businesses that have made a commitment of demonstrated Sustainable Management of Assets, Resources, and Technology (SMART) practices.

The City’s SMART program is supported by partners such as Spokane Clean Air, Greater Spokane Incorporated, Sustainable Local Investment Partners, and the Go Green Directory and Out There Monthly. And, it’s designed to encourage Spokane businesses to adopt policies and practices that encourage good management of:

  • Financial,
  • Built,
  • Natural, and
  • Human Capital.

“When we asked businesses what we could do to encourage them to adopt these practices, they told us that they needed help marketing their commitment to sustainability to their customers,” says Mayor Mary Verner. “We hope people will see this as a seal of approval for these businesses.”

Businesses can apply to be recognized at two different levels. The levels of recognition are:

  • Participant- for businesses that commit to make a change, and
  • Certified- for businesses that demonstrate they have and will continue to make changes.

A new category has been added and changes have been made to existing categories to allow even more businesses to qualify for recognition. The categories include:

  • Energy Efficiency
  • Renewable Energy
  • Waste Reduction/Recycling
  • Water Conservation
  • Pollution Prevention
  • Transportation
  • Green Building
  • Historic Preservation (new)
  • Innovation (for outstanding achievement within one of the eight categories above)

Businesses have until Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 to apply for 2010 recognition. Application materials and a more detailed program description.
