Release Date: 6/16/2011 4:00:00 PM

MEDIA CONTACT: Ann Deasy 625-6318

In celebration of Father’s Day, an open house will be held at the Historic Dodd House, 603 S. Arthur St., on Saturday, June 18, and Sunday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This Sunday, June 19, 2011, marks one year since Spokane celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of Father’s Day. The annual celebration was founded by a Spokane woman named Sonora Smart Dodd.

Dodd, who was raised by her father from the age of 16, was inspired by a Mother’s Day Sermon in 1909 to propose equal recognition for fathers. The first Father’s Day took place in Spokane on June 19, 1910.

Sunday’s open house will have a special guest, Marie Smart Magnuson, niece of Sonora. Marie, 98 years of age, also will be showing some of her art work. She and her mother assisted Sonora with the making of native dolls. Marie still paints, does lapidary work, and magnificent soap stone sculptures.
