City Details Fourth of July Activities, Closures

Independence Day celebration planned in Riverfront Park

In observance of the Independence Day holiday, Spokane City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, July 4. Parking meters don’t have to be plugged on July 4. Garbage pickup and curbside recycling will be a day late after the Fourth of July with Friday’s pickup occurring on Saturday, July 7.
Here are some additional closures and cancellations:

  • The garbage transfer stations and the Waste-to-Energy facility will be closed on Wednesday, July 4.
  • All Spokane Public Library branches will be closed on Wednesday, July 4.
  • The Spokane City Council briefing session and legislative meeting for the week of July 4 have been cancelled because of a lack of a quorum. The Council will resume their regular schedule on Monday, July 9, meeting at 3:30 and 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers in the lower level of City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. Meetings also are shown live on CityCable 5 and on the City’s website.

Meanwhile, activities abound for the weekend. Riverfront Park will host a community Fourth of July Celebration and Fireworks Display, with food, entertainment, rides, kid activities, and more on Wednesday, July 4. Reserved seating for the fireworks display is available on the steps adjacent to the floating stage on the south side of the river near the INB Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $8 per person. Call 625-6602 to purchase.

In addition, the Riverfront Park attractions, including the Imax Theater, Spokane Falls Skyride, Pavilion rides, and Carousel, are open on the Fourth of July and throughout the weekend.

City pools, splash pads, and golf courses also are open. For pool and splash pad information call the Aquatics Hotline at 625-6960. For golf course information, please call Downriver at 327-5269, Esmeralda at 487-6291, Indian Canyon at 747-9317, and The Creek at Qualchan at 448-9317.

Other City sponsored events around the Fourth of July weekend include:

  • Kick off to the Fourth of July Celebration and Fireworks Display at Riverfront Park’s Lilac Bowl Stage on Tuesday, July 3, at 6 p.m. includes swing dance lessons, music by Six Foot Swing, and Wingspan and Jazz in Blue from the Air National Guard, followed by a brief fireworks display.
  • Photography 2012 in the Chase Gallery at Spokane’s City Hall from Tuesday, July 3, through Friday, Aug. 31. Spokane Arts Commission visually stunning photographs from a variety of artists. Go to for information.
  • Free live music at the Manito Park Bench Café on Friday, July 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This week’s musical act is Just Plain Darin featuring acoustic rock and originals.
  • The First Friday Visual Arts Tour sponsored by the Spokane Arts Commission and the Downtown Spokane Partnership on Friday, July 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. For listings.
  • Friday Fun Night at Riverfront Park on Friday, July 6, from 5 to 9 p.m. Amusement rides, including Enchanted Forest Mini-Golf, are $1 along with hot dogs for $1 at the Pavilion Café and Carousel Grill.

Just a reminder: Fireworks are illegal in the City of Spokane, as well as in Spokane County and the cities of Spokane Valley, Cheney, and Liberty Lake. Fireworks fines range from $513 to $1,000 for each infraction. Residents can report violations by calling Crime Check at 456-2233.

Residents can dispose of unwanted fireworks in the household hazardous waste area at the Waste-to-Energy Facility and the transfer stations. There is no disposal cost.
