City Street Crews Out Working; Prepared to Handle Snow Tonight & Tomorrow

Release Date: 12/19/2012 3:45:00 PM

CONTACT: Marlene Feist 509.625.6740 or Ann Deasy 509.625.6318

With light snow falling throughout the City, City of Spokane Street Department crews are spreading deicer and sand and will switch to plowing activities if enough snow accumulates. Crews typically switch to plowing when there’s about an inch of snow on the ground.

Crews currently are focusing on hills and intersections on arterials. Snow is beginning to accumulate on the far North and South sides of the City already, while streets are mostly wet in the City core right now. Motorists should anticipate slick conditions during the evening commute.

If snow develops as forecast now, night crews will stay late, and Thursday morning crews will come in early to improve street conditions for the morning commute, says Street Director Mark Serbousek. Street officials will call in additional personnel as needed to respond effectively.

“We’ve been operating on winter schedules since Nov. 15, and our equipment and employees are ready to respond. As always, we ask motorists to slow down and drive according to conditions when the snow flies,” Serbousek says.

The City’s snow removal activities are designed to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians, ensure emergency responders can reach citizens, and enhance movement for pedestrians, motorists and economic activity.

Information on the City’s snow removal efforts is available on the City’s website. Citizens also can stay up to date on snow removal by following the City on Facebook   or on Twitter.
