Spokane Mayor David Condon issued the following statement regarding the legal action filed today seeking clarity on the citizen initiatives:

“I respect the initiative process, and feel a strong obligation to do what is right for the citizens of Spokane. My focus is the long-term interests of our community.

I have spent the past several weeks weighing the considerable input I have received, including two separate legal opinions that suggest there are serious constitutional challenges with the citizen initiatives. The dialogue has been healthy and informative.

At its core, the purpose of the initiative process is to create the kind of give and take that allows the community to be well informed about important issues shaping Spokane. A robust community dialogue is a part of the initiative process, and the action taken by these community leaders is a part of that discussion.

Fundamentally, I have serious questions about whether the proposed initiatives will stand up to constitutional scrutiny. Those concerns are based on prior court decisions resulting from similar initiatives in other Washington communities, and that is something the courts have now been asked to decide.”
