Spokane School Board, City Council to consider land swap

Public hearings scheduled for next week

Release Date: 7/19/2013 10:30:00 AM

MEDIA CONTACTS:  Brian Coddington, Communications Director, City of Spokane, 509.625.6740

Erica Hallock, Community Relations Director, Spokane Public Schools, 509.354.7338

Spokane Public Schools' Board of Directors and the Spokane City Council will consider at separate meetings next week a proposal to swap two pieces of land and maximize the use of both properties.

The City has proposed trading approximately 20 acres of property adjacent to Joe Albi Stadium in exchange for 1.9 acres of land owned by Spokane Public Schools south of the youth sports complex along Regal Street. Separate appraisals have assessed the properties as similar in value.

"The exchange better aligns uses of the properties for both the School District and the City," said Dr. Mark Anderson, associate superintendent for Spokane Public Schools. "We no longer need the property off Regal, and we do need property in the future for additional educational facilities."

The City is interested in the property on Regal for a mix of traffic and development opportunities, said Jan Quintrall, director of Business and Developer Services.

"The City of Spokane and Spokane Public Schools are working toward the common goal of leveraging each other's strengths to best use community resources," said Spokane Mayor David Condon. "We are excited about this opportunity for each to meet our respective needs."

The City Council will review the deal on Monday, July 22 at its regular 6 p.m. meeting at City Hall. Separately, the Board of Directors for Spokane Schools will consider the proposed transaction, along with an extension of the lease for Joe Albi Stadium, at its regular meeting on July 24, starting at 5:30 p.m.
