Martin Luther King Jr. Way in the University District opened on May 31 with a moving ceremony. The video of the ceremony will be replayed on CityCable 5 throughout the month of June and also is available for viewing on the City’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/cityofspokane.

The ceremony will be shown on CityCable 5 on:
• Wednesday, June 6, at 10 p.m.
• Saturday, June 9, at 4 p.m.
• Sunday, June 10, at 1 p.m.
• Wednesday, June 13, at 1 p.m.
• Saturday, June 16, at 1 p.m.
• Wednesday, June 20, at 8 p.m.

“Our celebration was about new connections, a new transportation connection that will enhance an exciting part of our City core and, more importantly, a new connection among people of all races and backgrounds,” Mayor David Condon said. As part of the celebration, Mayor Condon presented keys to the City to both the Rev. Percy “Happy” Watkins and Ivan Bush, long-time organizers of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity March and community leaders.

The newly completed street features bike lanes, street trees, wide sidewalks, and an elevated median; it reduces vehicular traffic on Spokane Falls Boulevard and helps slow traffic in the center of the Riverpoint campus. Construction on Martin Luther King Jr. Way began in July 2010; the $3.6 million project was funded by federal and state funds.

CityCable 5 is the City of Spokane’s government-access cable station; it’s found on channel 5 on the Comcast cable system in Spokane.
