Two miners in the Colville area were killed by Natives. The surrounding tribes formed an alliance against the encroaching civilization. Colonel Steptoe was sent north from Walla Walla to investigate the killings. Steptoe was confronted by the alliance and fled with his troops through the night to a hilltop in Rosalia. This area south of Rosalia was named Steptoe Butte. |
