Spokane Mayor David Condon is requesting citizens will weigh in on the qualities and attributes they would like to see in a new Chief of Police.

“Restoring public confidence in the Spokane Police Department is my highest priority, and I want to ensure that citizens have an opportunity to tell us what they think is important as we continue with the hiring process,” says Mayor Condon.

Spokane’s Police Advisory Committee (PAC) will accept comments on Thursday from citizens on the attributes and qualities that they would like in a new chief. The PAC will hold its quarterly public meeting on Thursday, March 15, at 5:30 p.m. at West Central Community Center, 1603 N. Belt.

The Spokane Police Department and the Office of Neighborhood Services also are working on a second event opportunity for citizens to provide comments in April. Additionally, citizens can send their comments to the City at policechiefsearch@spokanecity.org. The recruitment flyer for the position of Chief of Police is attached for citizens to review.

The City will use the information provided by citizens through the recruitment and interview process for a new Chief.

“Our Police Chief must represent the values of our citizens and work to become part of our community,” Mayor Condon says. “Our citizens are in the best position to recommend how to achieve those goals.”

The City will repost the Police Chief opening by the end of March. The City had sought applicants for the position of Police Chief between November and mid-February, but the Mayor would like a larger and more diverse pool to select potential candidates.

A detailed selection process with a number of interview panels, including citizens and City leaders and employees, is being developed as well.
