Release Date: 5/31/2012 12:30:00 PM

MEDIA CONTACTS: Marlene Feist, City of Spokane, (509) 625-6740 and Martha Lou Wheatley-Billeter, Spokane County, (509) 477-7195

Spokane Mayor David Condon and Spokane County Commission Chair Todd Mielke today are releasing a letter from the Department of the Air Force’s Air Mobility Command Headquarters that further demonstrates the importance of implementing the recommendations from the Joint Land Use Study (JLUS).

The letter, from U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Timothy S. Green, states:

“I support the JLUS efforts to provide recommendations and guidance so future growth does not provide challenges to the base and its surrounding communities. Ultimately, the community-based process recognizes that it is up to the local governments and citizens to decide the acceptability of the recommended land uses and associated regulations. Fairchild will work with local governments as they pursue the implementation of the JLUS recommendations.”

“The JLUS ordinances help protect Fairchild’s mission, while providing the predictability that will allow for growth and development to occur on the West Plains,” says Mayor David Condon. “Fairchild has been part of our community fabric for more than 70 years, and we want to continue our strong relationship with the base for the health of our community.”

“Fairchild Air Force Base is our community’s largest single employer, and those jobs contribute to the overall economic health of Spokane County,” says Commissioner Mielke. “With the JLUS, we are protecting Fairchild today and positioning it well for the future.”

This spring, both the City of Spokane and Spokane County voted to implement the recommendations within the JLUS, which is a land-use planning effort between Fairchild Air Force Base and the surrounding communities. The process was funded by the Department of Defense.

The JLUS recommendations are designed to prevent encroachment from development, which is a major reason bases around the nation close. The implementation will help preserve Fairchild’s future and could enhance community efforts to attract KC-46A tankers to the Spokane base.
